Never Say Never

They say not to trust anybody as far as you can throw them. Well, I see why. She had shattered my heart into pieces but she was so etched in me that it was hard to let go.  I couldn’t believe that I was in this predicament or better yet that I still somewhat loved her. As I looked in the mirror at my reflection I was ashamed. I had nearly taken someone’s life, her life at that. I was better than this, I deserved more. Never was I going to ever let anybody play me again. NEVER.

I listened to her on the phone whispering. I couldn’t quite make out what she was saying but I knew that whatever it was, it wasn’t meant for me to hear. “He won’t know,” she responded and looked over her shoulder. I was standing in the doorway; the door was cracked. She didn’t hear me walk up, she was so concerned with the conversation she was having that she didn’t know I had been there for about 3 minutes. Her and I had been having some relationship problems within the past year or so. We promised each other that we would stay committed to one another and work through our issues. Some days I feel like it was just me doing all the work. I was definitely skeptical of what she had going on but Kyra was my baby, she loved me, she wouldn’t hurt me. As she hung up the phone I opened the door. “You ready?” “Yea”, she responded. “I’m just making some last minute arrangements for us.” Next weekend was my birthday and to hear her tell it she was pulling out all the stops. I was looking forward to it. Tonight I made us dinner reservations at Vida. It was an upscale Mexican restaurant. Her and I had had busy weeks so instead of me cooking, as Friday’s we’re my days I decided to treat us.

“Mr. Calhoun,” the hostess greeted as we walked in. “It’s been awhile. Your usual table?” “Yes. Thank you.” I held Kyra’s hand as Felipe lead the way. Vida was our spot we came here at least twice a month. Our usual table was a nice booth, seated in front of the riverfront. A scenic view for sure. “Your waitress will be right with you,” he stated sitting the menus down. “Thank you.” As I looked away from Felipe I saw Kyra hastily doing something with her phone then locking it. I couldn’t hold it in anymore. “So what you got going on? Every five minutes you looking at your phone. I walk in the house, you whispering and shit.” She looked astonished, as if I was crazy for asking such a question. “Well excuse me for trying to make last minute arrangements for your birthday. I’ll just leave it alone. That’s the insecure shit,” she responded, now clearly pissed off. “I’m not insecure. You tell me what it is, I’m good. You talking to somebody else then I’ll let you be. You already know I ain’t for the bullshit.” She looked me in my eyes and replied, “Dre, I’m trying to plan you a surprise. It’s been kind of hard keeping that from you since you on my head every five seconds. But nobody’s trying to play you. I love you.” She rubbed my face and began to kiss my lips. She had something on me, just that quick I forgot why I was tripping.

My birthday was now two days away. I was at the job but wanted so bad to be home. I missed my baby and after last night she had a brother gone. I loved what I do but it had its days. I was a producer for one of the biggest television networks. Today was our weekly meeting and the team was trying to come up with a story for the week. These days were always slow. I looked down at my watch, it was only 10am. It was out of the norm for me to leave let alone leave early because I believed in a hard day’s work. I began to think about it even more “Whatever,” I said to myself. “I’m taking the day.” I informed the team I was out for the remainder of the day and grabbed my bag to leave.

I pulled up to the house to see Kyra’s car. Some days were slow for her at the shop. We were only 5 minutes away so she would come home for lunch and go back to work later. I opened the door and headed to the kitchen. I wanted a little snack. Grabbing a bag of chips I began to walk upstairs. I knew she had fallen asleep on the chair in the room like she always did while eating lunch. As I got closer to the door I began to hear faint noises.
